Gamma Sterilization
Gamma sterilization uses ionizing gamma radiation to sterilize devices inside their final sealed packaging at ambient temperature, common for single-use medical disposables.
Gamma sterilization uses ionizing gamma radiation to sterilize devices inside their final sealed packaging, at ambient temperature and without added moisture or gas. The radiation passes straight through the carton and the sterile barrier system to inactivate microorganisms in a single exposure, so the product is sterilized in the same package it will ship and be stored in. Like EO sterilization, it is an industrial, facility-scale method — the way disposables arrive sterile from the manufacturer, not a process a clinic runs itself.
For hair restoration buyers, gamma is one of the two methods that dominate the single-use consumables shelf. Because it needs no porous package face and no residue-clearing period, gamma is often used for solid plastics and closed assemblies, and it can process pallet-scale volumes at once. The trade-off buyers should be aware of is material sensitivity: high radiation doses can, over time and dose, alter some polymers — causing slight discoloration or embrittlement in susceptible resins. This is a manufacturer's material-selection concern rather than a clinic task, but it is why the sterilization method is a real specification attribute and not an interchangeable detail.
At goods receipt, the buyer's job is verification and traceability, not reprocessing. Confirm the delivered lots carry the sterilization method your specification names, check that each sterile barrier system is intact with a legible process indicator, and read the instructions for use for the stated method and any single-use restriction. Record the lot number against the delivery so any later question about a batch resolves to its processing record. A gamma-sterilized disposable is sterile for that one sealed presentation; once the barrier is opened, the status ends.
Storage follows the same rules as any barriered consumable. Keep packs sealed, dry, off the floor and away from direct heat and sunlight, and rotate by shelf life so the earliest date leaves first. Do not attempt to re-sterilize a gamma-processed single-use item in a clinic autoclave; steam heat is a different stress from radiation and reprocessing a single-use device falls outside its intended use.
