Luer Lock

A luer lock is a threaded connector that mechanically secures a syringe, cannula or tube to its counterpart on a standardized taper, resisting accidental disconnection under pressure.

A luer lock is a threaded connector that joins a syringe, cannula, needle or length of tubing to its counterpart on a standardized 6 percent conical taper, with an outer collar that screws down so the two halves cannot separate under injection pressure. It contrasts with the luer slip, which relies only on a friction push-fit of the same taper. The taper itself is common to both; the "lock" is the added thread that turns a slip joint into a secured one.

In a hair restoration clinic, luer lock fittings appear wherever fluid moves under force: tumescent infiltration, saline flushing of grafts, PRP handling, and any cannula-based delivery. The taper is a shared geometry, which is why a luer lock syringe from one supplier mates with a luer cannula from another. That interchangeability is a genuine convenience at the bench, but it is also the reason goods-receipt inspection matters. On delivery, dry-fit a sample from each lot to a mating part and confirm the thread engages fully and the taper seats without wobble. A hub that cross-threads or seats loose is a rejection at receipt, not a discovery mid-procedure.

Buyers should read the fitting label precisely, because "luer" alone is ambiguous. A pack marked luer slip will push apart under the same pressure that a luer lock holds, and substituting one for the other silently changes how a connection behaves. Note male versus female orientation as well: a male luer lock (threaded collar) pairs with a female luer, and a mismatch on that axis makes two "luer lock" items refuse to join. Capture the exact designation in the purchase specification and check it against the delivered instructions for use rather than assuming.

Material and reuse status drive the rest of the procurement decision. Most clinic luer lock consumables are single-use polymer, delivered inside a sterile barrier system and discarded after one patient. Reusable metal fittings on handpieces or cannula hubs are a different case: they enter the reprocessing line and must survive repeated cycles without the taper distorting, so their handling belongs in the instrument reprocessing workflow. Store single-use luer lock stock in its original packaging, away from heat and solvents that can soften a polymer thread, and rotate by expiry so the oldest sealed units leave first.
