The number of follicular units present per square centimetre of the donor scalp, measured before harvesting.
Donor density is the number of follicular units present in a given area of the donor scalp, conventionally expressed as follicular units per square centimetre. It describes how tightly packed the harvestable hair is at the back and sides of the head, and it is one of the first measurements taken when planning a hair restoration case, because it sets the ceiling on how many grafts a donor area can safely yield.
In practice
Density is assessed with a densitometer — a handheld magnifier, sometimes with a camera and software, placed over a marked area of scalp so units can be counted within a known window. The count is usually taken at several points, since density is not uniform: the central occipital scalp is typically richer than the temporal and periauricular margins. Alongside the raw unit count, a good assessment records the split between single-, double-, and multi-hair follicular units and the hair caliber, because those figures shape instrument choice as much as the density number itself. What buyers and professionals should know
The critical caveat is that density and yield are not the same thing. A high count per square centimetre does not license harvesting all of it; over-harvesting thins the donor visibly and permanently, so the safe extraction is a fraction of what is present, judged to leave the donor area looking intact. Density therefore constrains planning in two directions at once — it says how much is there and, by implication, how much must be left behind. Measurement itself carries variance: readings depend on the window size, the sites chosen, and the person counting, so a single figure from one spot can mislead. Treat density as a mapped profile across the donor, not a one-number verdict.
For equipment and workflow, density interacts with everything downstream. Denser donors mean more extractions in a given area, which raises the premium on clean cutting to keep the transection rate low and protect the units that remain.
