A sapphire blade is a recipient-site incision blade whose cutting tip is made from synthetic sapphire — a lab-grown crystalline form of aluminium oxide — rather than surgical steel. Synthetic sapphire is very hard and takes a fine, symmetric edge that resists dulling, which is why it is used to make the small incisions that grafts are placed into during hair restoration.
